The history and milestones of the Department of Career Sciences
As part of the KITMAN learning experience, students participate in immersive educational activities at The Kaset, Hua Hin, serving as the programme’s “Real” Laboratory for experiential tourism and hospitality learning. This environment allows students to engage directly with destination management, service operations, creative tourism activities, and real-world industry practices.
In 2021, the department further modernized its academic programmes through curriculum revisions, resulting in the Bachelor of Arts in Service Creation for Tourism Business and the Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Tourism Management (International Programme). Students enrolled under these revised curricula are expected to complete their studies in 2025.
In 2016, the department further revised its curricula to enhance their modernity and industry relevance, resulting in the programmes in Bachelor of Arts in Tourism Innovation and Bachelor of Arts Integrated Tourism Management (International Programme).
Subsequently, the Department of Career Sciences was officially renamed the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Industry in order to better reflect the evolving academic disciplines, industry specialization, and professional orientations represented within the department.
In 2012, the Department of Career Sciences introduced an additional academic programme: the Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Tourism Management (International Programme). The programme had previously received approval from the University Council in 2010 and officially admitted its first cohort of students in the 2012 academic year.
The programme adopted an international academic calendar, with the first semester commencing in August each year, in alignment with international educational standards and global academic practices.
In 2011, the Department of Career Sciences undertook the second major curriculum revision. During this revision, the Bachelor of Arts in Travel and Tourism programme was restructured to align with the Thailand Qualifications Framework for Higher Education in Tourism and Hospitality under the revised curriculum titled the “Bachelor of Arts in Tourism (Revised Curriculum, 2011).” The programme officially commenced student admissions from the 2011 academic year onward.
In 1999, the Department of Career Sciences revised all three academic programmes to enhance their modernity and relevance in response to the changing demands of industry and society. The revised curricula were officially implemented beginning in the 2000 academic year onward.
The Bachelor of Arts in Secretarial Studies was later merged with related academic disciplines in response to changes in educational direction and evolving industry demands, aiming to enhance interdisciplinary learning and broaden students’ professional competencies.
Later, in 1996, the department expanded its academic offerings by introducing an additional programme: the Bachelor of Arts in Secretarial Studies, further strengthening its commitment to career-oriented education and professional development across diverse service industries.
The Department of Career Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, is recognized as the first higher education institution in Thailand to offer undergraduate programmes in tourism and hotel studies. Teaching commenced in 1982 during the early developmental stage of Thailand’s tourism industry, reflecting the university’s visionary role in preparing professional human resources for the rapidly growing service sector.
Initially, the department offered two academic programmes: the Bachelor of Arts in Travel and Tourism and the Bachelor of Arts in Hotel Studies. These programmes were considered among the pioneering tourism and hospitality degree programmes in Thailand and played a significant role in laying the academic foundation for tourism and hospitality education in the country.
The Department of Career Sciences was established simultaneously with the founding of the Faculty of Humanities, Kasetsart University, on 17 June 1981. It was one of the three original departments emphasizing the philosophy of “Career Education,” aiming to integrate academic knowledge with professional and practical competencies. The department has played an important role in advancing interdisciplinary education that combines academic knowledge, practical skills, and service professionalism in response to the evolving needs of society and industry.
The three departments under this educational orientation included the Department of Communication Arts (currently the Department of Music and the Department of Communication Arts and Information Science), the Department of Library Science (later merged with the Department of Communication Arts and Information Science), and the Department of Career Sciences.
